11:00 AM – 1:00 PM – MOOP Champagne Train – All aboard the MOOP train! Get a ride to the perimeter fence on the Earth Guardian art car while sipping champagne and listening to music, then see what ends up on the fence and put it in your MOOP bag.

Wednesday – August 30, 2017

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM Champagne Problems – Join us for the 3rd annual Champagne Problems MOOP playa clean-up party!  We’ll provde everything you need including a great crew and lots of champagne!  Let’s take 1 hour to celebrate all the playa gives us by showing it some love.

11:00 AM – 1:00 PM – MOOP Champagne Train – All aboard the MOOP train! Get a ride to the perimeter fence on the Earth Guardian art car while sipping champagne and listening to music, then see what ends up on the fence and put it in your MOOP bag.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Geology of the Black Rock Desert – Ever wondered about those amazing land forms around Black Rock City? Come and learn how they were formed and what they’re about. Come and learn about the rocks from Cathy Busby, our expert field geologist from UC Davis.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Burning Man and the Environment – Since 1991 on the playa Burning Man has evolved and innovated to protect the Black Rock Desert. Learn the history starting with the installation of the perimeter fence, fire blankets and evapotrons. When was the Leave No Trace protocol brought to the playa? When was the first year for the Burner Express buses? What else is Burning Man doing to protect the Black Rock Desert and the planet?

3:00 PM -4:30 PM  Fly Ranch Brainstorming Session – Join Earth Guardians to learn about the environment at Fly Ranch. What are the ecological opportunities and challenges we face as stewards of this desert oasis? Brainstorm ecological planning, development and restoration with the Fly Ranch Man project team.

Dave Cooper, local and former manager of the Black Rock NCA will talk about playa dust, wilderness areas, historic emigrant trails, wildlife, wild horses, & more. Come with questions!

Science Friday – September 1, 2017

I:00 PM – 2:00 PM – How Drought and Climate Change Threaten Little Monsters in Mountain Streams – Come look through microscopes with Dr. David Herbst, University of California Research Scientist, at amazing aquatic insects of Sierra Nevada streams and learn how they are threatened by climate change and drought.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM  – Fixing Our Mistakes: Historic Mining Waste in the Sierra Nevada and Efforts to Clean It Up. Bruce Medhurst, Research Scientist at the University of California, will talk about a 20 year study to monitor the cleanup of acid mine drainage contaminating a Sierra Nevada stream.

Saturday – September 2, 2017

10:00 – 11:00 AM – World’s Largest Fire Blanket – Senior Earth Guardian and Leave No Trace Master Educator Mike Bilbo will discuss the history of burn scars on the playa, Leave No Trace solutions, and Burning Man’s stewardship through large scale solutions known as burn platforms. Learn also what is the latest protocol for building a fire when camping in back country areas. Then off we go via bike tour to see the world’s largest fire blanket. How big is it, what is it made of? We will investigate.
