Saturday - August 23, 2014

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM – LNT Outreach Team-BLM Compliance Team Training - Last year Earth Guardians volunteered to go out with BLM staff with GPS's and cameras to go out to specific spots in the city, checking for oil drips, grey water spills, black water spills and burn barrel problems.  BLM was checking for permit violations and we were along to help both as LNT advisors and cultural ambassadors.  This year,  we'll be going out each morning with Friends of Black Rock volunteers again with BLM.  It's a great opportunity to have 'boots on the ground' and share LNT love. This is a training for those volunteers. 

Sunday - August 24, 2014

10:00 PM – 1:00 PM - Hot Springs Patrol Driver Training & Coordination Meeting - Our annual Sunday get together with all of the Rangers and Earth Guardians making hot spring patrols happen!  We'll be reviewing driver shifts, protocols and daily coordination/communications before heading out on the playa to do a test drive around this year's route to each hot spring and set up the volunteer shelters.  Go Drivers!

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Raise a Glass to Hot Spring Drivers: Come join us in thanking our hardworking Hot Spring Patrol Drivers - getting our volunteers out and back to Trego, Black Rock and Double Hot safely!

5:00 PM – 6:00 PM: All Hands on Deck Camp Meeting: All Earth Guardian campers are requested to attend this meeting to introduce everyone, go over camp operations, coverage of camp shifts, and the event schedule for the week.

We'll be going out each morning with Friends of Black Rock volunteers as both LNT advisors and cultural ambassadors with BLM as they check for spills and burn barrel problems.  It's a great opportunity to include our own 'boots on the ground' and share LNT love.  Volunteers will get a meal after each morning or afternoon shift and should attend the pre-event or Tuesday training (2pm).

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM - Alternative Energy Demo Garden - Cookies served baked in a solar oven.  An assortment of alternative energy devices will be on display including DIY solar ovens, a commercial solar oven, rocket stoves, evapotron for gray water and a Black Rock Solar array

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Camp Potluck: Come and meet your Earth Guardian camp mates!  We’ll be sharing nosh and opening the EG bar for business

We'll be going out each morning with Friends of Black Rock volunteers as both LNT advisors and cultural ambassadors with BLM as they check for spills and burn barrel problems.  It's a great opportunity to include our own 'boots on the ground' and share LNT love.  Volunteers will get a meal after each morning or afternoon shift and should attend the pre-event or Tuesday training (2pm).

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM - Alternative Energy Demo Garden - Cookies served baked in a solar oven.  An assortment of alternative energy devices will be on display including DIY solar ovens, a commercial solar oven, rocket stoves, evapotron for gray water and a Black Rock Solar array

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Earth Guardian Volunteer Training – Calling all Earth Guardians ready to volunteer. We need YOU at our front line. This is a training session for all volunteers for the front desk, to help run the activities and for camp operations! All EG's staying at the EG camp on the esplanade are expected to do at least one desk and one activities support or camp opeations shift. Shifts are available each morning and afternoon, each day of the event.

4:00 AM - 5:00 PM - Black Rock Playa Dust - what's in it? Is it bad for you? How do you clean it up?: Receive a full explanation of the chemical and mineralogical data from a playa sample inside of BRC in 2010, and find out the good and bad things about playa dust. Ever had trouble cleaning up after the trip to BRC? Learn a great recipe which involves simple household ingredients which removes playa dust once and for all. In addition, it's environmentally friendly and non-toxic. REAL 'Better living through chemistry' with a demo. (George Davis)

6:15 AM – 9:00 AM Sunrise Playa Bike Tour - The crack of dawn is the best time to see wildlife on the open playa, and to take pictures in the 'golden hour'. We'll ride out to the trash fence and deep playa destinations to see what surprises the morning has in store. (Andy Baker)

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Environmental Art Talk/Bike Tour - Come hear some BRC artists talk about their art projects that are environmentally-themed, use recycled materials or are solar-powered, then let's take a bike tour to see them.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Old Stuff, New Stuff: An Archaeology of Place - Take a trip to the ancient Black Rock Desert with archaeologist Ed Stoner from WCRM, Western Cultural Resource Management.

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM World's Largest Fire Blanket - Senior Earth Guardian and Leave No Trace Master Educator Mike Bilbo will discuss the history of burn scars on the playa, Leave No Trace solutions, and Burning Man's stewardship through large scale solutions known as burn platforms. Learn also what is the latest protocol for building a fire when camping in back country areas. Then off we go via bike tour to see the world's largest fire blanket. How big is it, what is it made of? 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM: Earth Party - Greening the Burn / Leave No Trace Cocktail Hour: All MOOP warriors and Green Heros – come and join us for some earthy libations from the EG bar and some Earth-produced nosh to celebrate your efforts!  Long live the LNT /green burners with no MOOP left behind! All model LNT/Green camps and other heros invited! Without you, Black Rock City would not be sustainable!

8:30 PM – 9:30 PM – More than just one word on Plastics -  Plastics: we love them and hate them.  Rebecca Braslau, organic chemistry professor will help us examine the history of plastics, what they are made of, health, environmental and societal issues, and future green possibilities.

9:30 PM - Midnight – LNTV: Environmental Movies on the Playa – This week we’ll be sharing movies we’ve found funny, inspirational, positive and life changing.  We’ll be looking at themes like:  Less is the New More, and are No Impact, Zero Waste, and Carbon Neutral possible and feasible in our lives?  Will technology save us, or is it up to us to take the steps necessary to change our world, not to save our planet, but to save ourselves.  Come join us on this nightly journey when you want a respite from your journey in Black Rock City.  Our movie schedule will be available at our front desk.

3:00 PM – 3:30PM – How to Make a Battery out of Algae & Why Should We? Learn about using algae biomass to make batteries that can be integrated into any current technology, algae-based batteries for the 21st century! (Adam Freeman)

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM -Legitimate Theory or Hoax: Meteorite Impact in the Black Rock Desert - why Black Rock is NOT an Impact: Get an overview of the basics of meteoritics and impact, and find out why the Black Rock is not from an impact. We will look at impact areas around the US that exhibit the identification clues that make them bona fide impacts. It comes with the caveat of not always believing what the popular science press tells us, and learning to question the data in the right way. Learn to be science savvy!

5:30 PM - 7:30 PM Sunset Playa Bike Tour - The playa under our feet seems featureless, but this vast lake bed is a dynamic, complex environment. Join desert experts on a journey to discover the subtle wonders that form the backdrop to Black Rock City.

7:30 PM - 8:30 PM - Plastic-Free Burning Man  - Author/World's leading anti-plastic Blogger Beth Terry will share her journey from self-confessed plastic junkie to empowered plastc-free activist and explain why we can't recycle our way out of this mess. Her message is powerful and full of positive suggestions that can reduce your plastic footprint. A tour of her (nearly) plastic-free campsite is featured before the talk. (Beth Terry)

Annie will go over the steps for making the stove out of recycled tin cans and then have the supplies so you can make one for yourself to take back to your camp. Limited to 10 that can make a stove but open to all for instructions. Sign up at Earth Guardians.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM - Playa on Tap Talk: If you drink bottled water, do you know where your water comes from and do you know what you are paying for? Chances are, it comes from your own municipal water source, but you are paying 700% of your tap water cost. Educate yourself about the sources, costs, health risks and scam of the bottled-water industry. Once you know the facts, you’ll likely never drink bottled water again. You’ll also learn how to break the bottle-habit and easy ways to drink tap water on the playa.

Learn how she did it, how she got started, how to get sponsors, and hear some interesting stories from over the years. She will also get into online campaigning and using online tools for environmental change.

3:00 – 4:00 PM T Shirt Bag Workshop - Annie will demonstrate how to make a T shirt bag that you can then use as a MOOP bag or as a grocery shopping bag back in the default world to minimize your use of single-use plastic bags. We will have the supplies so you can make and decorate your own bag to take away with you. We will also demonstrate how to make your own toothpaste and wet wipes.
