Please come and attend one of our events at the EG pavilion! We offer many events where you can learn, discuss, build and have fun. We also have volunteer shifts that need you! Stop by and sign up for a shift or preregister for a bike tour!

Saturday - August 29, 2015

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM – LNT Outreach Team-BLM Compliance Team Training - Last year Earth Guardians volunteered to go out with BLM staff with GPS's and cameras to go out to specific spots in the city, checking for oil drips, grey water spills, black water spills and burn barrel problems.  BLM was checking for permit violations and we were along to help both as LNT advisors and cultural ambassadors.  This year,  we'll be going out each morning with Friends of Black Rock volunteers again with BLM.  It's a great opportunity to have 'boots on the ground' and share LNT love. This is a training for those volunteers. 

Sunday - August 30, 2015

10:00 PM – 1:00 PM - Hot Springs Patrol Driver Training & Coordination Meeting - Our annual Sunday get together with all of the Rangers and Earth Guardians making hot spring patrols happen!  We'll be reviewing driver shifts, protocols and daily coordination/communications before heading out on the playa to do a test drive around this year's route to each hot spring and set up the volunteer shelters.  Go Drivers!

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Raise a Glass to Hot Spring Drivers: Come join us in thanking our hardworking Hot Spring Patrol Drivers - getting our volunteers out and back to Trego, Black Rock and Double Hot safely!

4:00 PM – 10:00 PM – Earth Guardian Open Bar- Come try a “Gray Water” or “Black Water” drink!

5:00 PM – 6:00 PM: All Hands on Deck Camp Meeting: All Earth Guardian campers are requested to attend this meeting to introduce everyone, go over camp operations, coverage of camp shifts, and the event schedule for the week.

Monday - August 31, 2015

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM - Alternative Energy Demo Garden - Cookies served baked in a solar oven.  An assortment of alternative energy devices will be on display including DIY solar ovens, a commercial solar oven, rocket stoves, evapotron for gray water and a Black Rock Solar array

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Camp Potluck: Come and meet your Earth Guardian camp mates!  We’ll be sharing nosh and opening the EG bar for business

Tuesday - September 1, 2015

11:00 AM - 1:00 AM: MOOP Train:All aboard the MOOP train! Can you see and pick up MOOP as we move through the city? Give back to BRC, we'll travel to the trash fence and around the city deMooping!

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM - Alternative Energy Demo Garden - Cookies served baked in a solar oven.  An assortment of alternative energy devices will be on display including DIY solar ovens, a commercial solar oven, rocket stoves, evapotron for gray water and a Black Rock Solar array

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Earth Guardian Volunteer Training – Calling all Earth Guardians ready to volunteer. We need YOU at our front line. This is a training session for all volunteers for the front desk, to help run the activities and for camp operations! All EG's staying at the EG camp on the esplanade are expected to do at least one desk and one activities support or camp opeations shift. Shifts are available each morning and afternoon, each day of the event.

4:00 AM - 5:00 PM - Black Rock Playa Dust - what's in it? Is it bad for you? How do you clean it up?: Receive a full explanation of the chemical and mineralogical data from a playa sample inside of BRC in 2010, and find out the good and bad things about playa dust. Ever had trouble cleaning up after the trip to BRC? Learn a great recipe which involves simple household ingredients which removes playa dust once and for all. In addition, it's environmentally friendly and non-toxic. REAL 'Better living through chemistry' with a demo. (George Davis)

Tuesday 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM  - Nathyn Knott, singer/songwriter will play his unique brand of hypnotic, feel good music inspired from the deepest recesses of our Universal Soul.  Awesome!

Wednesday - September 2, 2015

6:15 AM – 9:00 AM Sunrise Playa Bike Tour - The crack of dawn is the best time to see wildlife on the open playa, and to take pictures in the 'golden hour'. We'll ride out to the trash fence and deep playa destinations to see what surprises the morning has in store. (Andy Baker)

8:30 AM –Noon: LNT Outreach Team (BLM Compliance) – Interested in learning how BLM checks for BRC permit violations ? We'll be going out each morning with Friends of Black Rock volunteers as both LNT advisors and cultural ambassadors with BLM as they check for spills and burn barrel problems.  It's a great opportunity to include our own 'boots on the ground' and share LNT love.  Volunteers will get a meal after each morning or afternoon shift and should attend the pre-event or Tuesday training (2pm).

9:30 AM - 12 PM Playa Dynamics Bike Tour - The playa under our feet seems featureless, but this vast lakebed is a dynamic, complex environment. We'll tour the open playa to search for clues to the processes that constantly reshape the surface. Who knows what wonders await the curious?

10:30 – Noon Champagne Problems- Ever What better way to help pick up MOOP than by drinking free champagne while you're doing it? "Champagne problems" is a MOOP party littered with gratefulness and aims to have a bubbly impact. Come enjoy some champagne, help clean up our fair city, and toast to all of our fortuneswdesk

 

11:30 – 12:30 PM: Geology of the Black Rock Desert - Ever wondered how those amazing land forms all around Black Rock City? Come and learn how they formed and what they're about from the John Dilles, our expert Geology professor from Oregon State.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Environmental Art Talk/Bike Tour - Come hear some BRC artists talk about their art projects that are environmentally-themed, use recycled materials or are solar-powered, then let's take a bike tour to see them.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM - More than just one word on Plastics - Plastics: we love them and hate them. Rebecca Braslau, organic chemistry professor at UC Santa Cruz, will discuss the history of plastics, what they are made of, health, environmental and societal issues, and exciting developments in emerging biosustainable and biodegradable plastics.

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM World's Largest Fire Blanket - Senior Earth Guardian and Leave No Trace Master Educator Mike Bilbo will discuss the history of burn scars on the playa, Leave No Trace solutions, and Burning Man's stewardship through large scale solutions known as burn platforms. Learn also what is the latest protocol for building a fire when camping in back country areas. Then off we go via bike tour to see the world's largest fire blanket. How big is it, what is it made of? We will investigate.

5:00 PM – 5:30 PM Learn About Earth Guardians - Ever thought of becoming an Earth Guardian? Come get a tour of our camp, hear about our mission, what we do and learn how you can join us!

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM: Earth Party - Greening the Burn / Leave No Trace Cocktail Hour: We will celebrate all of you Green, Eco and LNT superheros with earthy libations from the EG bar and some Earth-produced nosh to celebrate the high valued LNT /green burners! All LNT/Green camps invited! Without you, Black Rock City would not be sustainable!

8:30 PM – 10:00 PM – Mushrooms as Allies for Surviving -  Paul Stamets will put the co-evolution of fungi and life on this planet into perspective and unveil the research that he and his team have conducted which makes a strong case that, by pairing with our fungal friends, we can restore habitats, clean water, support and renew foodwebs, and strengthen ecosystems at a time when habitats and humans are in collision.

6:30 AM – 7:30 AM Tai Chi – Experience the beauty of the movements and learn relaxation, balance and coordination in this early morning class. (Mark Kuehne)

10:00 AM – 10:30 AM - Simple Solar Cooker Construction Workshop: Learn how to make a simple solar cooker.  The Hunger (playa name) will go over the steps for making one for yourself including passing out the pattern and instructions.  A raffle will be held for one lucky participant to receive a stove. 11:00 PM - 11:30 PM- Puppet Show- An entertaining half hour for the kids with puppets completely made from recycled materials. The message is Leave No Trace with an emphasis on not leaving micro trash behind. Kids attending will get their very own handmade MOOP bag.

11:45 AM – 12:45 PM - Dance 4 Positivity: International Human Color Wheel - Join us in dance/meditation with intention of creating POSITIVITY around the globe beginning with ourselves. Together we will draw upon the incredible energy of the Cosmos and nurture & cultivate it until with abundance it bursts back into the Universe for all to experience, for all to share. A limited number of Color Wheel veils will be available or bring your own (and one to share)!

Dave Cooper, local and former manager of the Black Rock NCA will talk about playa dust, wilderness areas, historic emigrant trails, wildlife, wild horses, & more.  Come with questions!

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM – Sustainable Gardening - Learn how to have a beautiful, healthy, lush garden without the use of pesticides. Learn how to attract beneficial insects and why they are so important. With a few simple steps, no matter where you live, you can grow a beautiful, sustainable & abundant garden to enjoy! (Suzanne Bontempo)

4:00 PM – 10:00 PM – Earth Guardians Open Bar – Come try a “Gray Water” or “Black Water” drink! 

4:30 PM – 5:00 PM - Triumbudrum Yoga Dance - With dance, music, props and costumes the 6 members of this modern dance troupe will use their bodies to tell a story on the theme of sustainability, demonstrating the impact on the environment and our outcry to be more mindful of our footprint on the plant.

5:30 PM - 7:30 PM Sunset Playa Bike Tour - The playa under our feet seems featureless, but this vast lake bed is a dynamic, complex environment. Join desert experts on a journey to discover the subtle wonders that form the backdrop to Black Rock City.

6:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Aztec Dance to Honor Mother Earth and the Four Directions -Aztec dancers with rare, traditional instrument accompanists will renew our connection to earth, wind, fire and water. Dances will be explained while connecting us to nature; we will end with a friendship community dance circle which all are encouraged to join.

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM  - Music of Nathan Knott - A wandering neo-psychedelic folk singer, multi-instrumentalist and genuine song and dance man singing inter-dimensional songs steeped in American blues, soul, funk, old timely, freakfolk, gospel, and big beat rock n roll and and performing with a kind of generosity and sincere breadth of emotion all too rare these days. The result is a kind of hypnotic feel good music that holds the ability to transport us through calculated sound, emotion, words/story.... to that warm feeling of coming home into this electric moment, the ever present and infectious NOW!

8:00 PM - 9:30 PM - Plastic-Free Burning Man  - Author/World's leading anti-plastic Blogger Beth Terry will share her journey from self-confessed plastic junkie to empowered plastc-free activist and explain why we can't recycle our way out of this mess. Her message is powerful and full of positive suggestions that can reduce your plastic footprint. An optional tour of her (nearly) plastic-free campsite is featured after the talk. (Beth Terry)

1:00 AM – 2:00 PM Simple Rocket Stove Construction Workshop - DIYers! Learn how to make a simple rocket stove that uses recycled paper pellets or twigs for fuel. Annie will go over the steps for making the stove out of recycled tin cans and then have the supplies so you can make one for yourself to take back to your camp. Limited to 10 that can make a stove but open to all for instructions. Sign up at Earth Guardians.

1:00 – 2:00 PM: Zero Waste Home - The world acclaimed author of Zero Waste Home, aka the “priestess of waste free living”, Bea Johnson, will share her tribulations and secrets to reducing her family’s trash to a quart jar per year. Through this upbeat presentation, you'll discover the amazing advantages that the zero waste lifestyle has to offer.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM - Plastic-Free Living as Spiritual Practice - Blogger and author of the book Plastic-Free, Beth Terry will talk about how reducing her addiction to plastic became an integral part of her journey toward a more mindful, present, and compassionate way of life.  Let's share our ideas for minimizing our plastic footprint while maximizing our connection to each other and the planet.

3:00 – 4:00 PM T Shirt Bag Workshop - Annie will demonstrate how to make a T shirt bag that you can then use as a MOOP bag or as a grocery shopping bag back in the default world to minimize your use of single-use plastic bags. We will have the supplies so you can make and decorate your own bag to take away with you. We will also demonstrate how to make your own toothpaste and wet wipes.
