Saturday - August 24, 2013

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM – LNT Outreach Team-BLM Compliance Team Training - Last year Earth Guardians volunteered to go out with BLM staff with GPS's and cameras to go out to specific spots in the city, checking for oil drips, grey water spills, black water spills and burn barrel problems.  BLM was checking for permit violations and we were along to help Burning Man with the documentation.  This year,  we'll be going out each morning with Friends of Black Rock volunteers as both LNT advisors and cultural ambassadors with BLM.  It's a great opportunity to have 'boots on the ground' and share LNT love.  Volunteers will all be getting lunch after each morning shift. (starting at 9:00am-1:00 pm)

Sunday - August 25, 2013

10:00 PM – 1:00 PM - Hot Springs Patrol Driver Training & Coordination Meeting - Our annual Sunday get together with all of the Rangers and Earth Guardians making hot spring patrols happen!  We'll be reviewing driver shifts, protocols and daily coordination/communications before heading out on the playa to do a test drive around this year's route to each hot spring and set up the volunteer shelters.  Go Drivers!

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Raise a Glass to Hot Spring Drivers: Come join us in thanking our hardworking Hot Spring Patrol Drivers - getting our volunteers out and back to Trego, Black Rock and Double Hot safely!

Monday - August 26, 2013

9:00 AM – 1:00 AM – LNT Outreach Team (BLM Compliance) – Interested in learning how BLM checks for BRC permit violations ? This year,  we'll be going out each morning with Friends of Black Rock volunteers as both LNT advisors and cultural ambassadors with BLM as they check for spills and burn barrel problems.  It's a great opportunity to include our own 'boots on the ground' and share LNT love.  Volunteers will all be getting lunch after each morning shift. (starting at 9am-noon), and should attend the pre-event or Tuesday training (2pm).

4:30 AM - 5:00 PM: LNT Principles 101 - Did you know that there was more to Leave No Trace then just cleaning up? There are actually 7 Leave No Trace principles and Mike Bilbo, Master LNT Trainer, will be covering one or two each day in these short talks!  Today he will cover: In Consideration of Your Neighbors and Other Playa Visitors.

5:00 PM – 6:00 PM – Bar Composting Talk - Learn how to compost for your camp bar with a Leave No Trace Happy Hour! Get lots of easy tips and tools from Sarah Sunrise, with 6+ years experience managing Zero Waste at large-scale events and festivals.

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Camp Potluck: Come and meet your Earth Guardian camp mates!  We’ll be sharing nosh and opening the EG bar for business

Tuesday - August 27, 2013

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Earth Guardian Information Desk Training – Calling all Earth Guardians ready to volunteer to man our an information desk where folks can come for information. We need YOU at our front line. This is a training session for desk volunteers! All EG's staying at the EG camp on the esplanade are expected to do at least one desk shift. Shifts run from 9-noon, noon-3 and 3-6pm each day of the event.

9:00 - Midnight – LNTV: Environmental Movies on the Playa – This week we’ll be sharing movies we’ve found funny, inspirational, positive and life changing.  We’ll be looking at themes like:  Less is the New More, and are No Impact, Zero Waste, and Carbon Neutral possible and feasible in our lives?  Will technology save us, or is it up to us to take the steps necessary to change our world, not to save our planet, but to save ourselves.  Come join us on this nightly journey when you want a respite from your journey in Black Rock City.  Our movie schedule will be available at our front desk.

11:30 – 12:30 PM: Geology of the Black Rock Desert - Ever wondered how those amazing land forms all around Black Rock City? Come and learn how they formed and what they're about from the famous geologic lecture team of Stan West and UC Geology Professor Cathey Busby.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Plastic-Free Burning Man Workshop - What is your plastic footprint?  Take a walk through your house (or Burning Man camp) from plastic-packaged food in the kitchen to toothbrushes and shampoo in the bathroom, our world is full of plastic.  And at Burning Man, we are sleep in plastic sleeping bags in plastic tents and wear plastic goggles.  And how much of our food and water is packaged in plastic? Although some plastics make our lives better, much of it is a problem -- polluting our oceans and beaches and harming our health with toxic chemicals. But what can one person do to be part of the solution? Join us for inspiring stories and practical tips to reduce plastic in your home and on the Playa.  Author Beth Terry will share her journey from self-confessed plastic addict to empowered plastic-free activist and explain why we can't just recycle our way out of this mess.  You may even get to peek at her (nearly) plastic-free campsite.

3:00 - 4:00 PM -Old Stuff, New Stuff- An Archaeology of Place. - Take a trip to the ancient Black Rock Desert with archaeologist Ed Stoner, from WCRM, Western Cultural Resource Management.

There are actually 7 Leave No Trace principles and Mike Bilbo, Master LNT Trainer, will be covering one or two each day in these short talks!  Today he will cover: What to Take and What to Leave on Public Lands..

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Earth Party - Greening the Burn / Leave No Trace Cocktail Hour: All MOOP warriors and Green Heros – come and join us for some earthy libations from the EG bar and some Earth-produced nosh to celebrate your efforts!  Long live the LNT /green burners with no MOOP left behind! All model LNT/Green camps and other heros invited! Without you, Black Rock City would not be sustainable!

9:00 PM -10:00 PM: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the Word -   Mushrooms, offer some powerful, practical solutions, which can be put into practice now. Paul is an American mycologist, author of 6 books, advocate of myco-remediation and medicinal mushrooms and an Honorary Doctor of Science, and multiple award winner for his work with fungi, knows of no other technology – except that of computer revolution – that can have such a dramatically positive effect on our lives.... !

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM - Our Inspiring Desert Home, the Black Rock Desert! - Come and learn everything you wanted to learn about the Black Rock Desert and more!  Dave Cooper, local and former manager of the Black Rock NCA will talk about the designation of the NCA, wilderness areas, emigrant trails, wildlife, and wild horses.  Come with questions!

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Earth Guardian Information Desk Training – Calling all Earth Guardians ready to volunteer to man our an information desk where folks can come for information. We need YOU at our front line. This is a training session for desk volunteers! All EG's staying at the EG camp on the esplanade are expected to do at least one desk shift. Shifts run from 9-noon, noon-3 and 3-6pm each day of the event.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM – More than just one word on Plastics -  Plastics: we love them and hate them.  Rebecca Braslau, organic chemistry professor will help us examine the history of plastics, what they are made of, health, environmental and societal issues, and future green possibilities.

1:00  PM- 2:00 PM- MOOP-Free Fashion - Leave No Trace includes more than trash. Poorly planned playa-wear can result in micro-moop, which is painstakingly difficult to clean up. Things like feathers, sequins, and pom-pons can easily become detached and blow away in the wind. Learn creative alternatives for embellishing your outfits.  Why expose your $300 boots to the harsh environment of BRC? Save your money and learn how to outfit yourself using upcycled materials. Playa-wear designer Judes (Judi Morales Gibson) will share tips and resources on how to re-work used clothing, household linens and found objects into economical, original and eco-friendly playa clothing. It’s not easy being fabulous, but it’s worth the effort.
