4:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Black Rock Playa Dust – what’s in it? Is it bad for you? How do you clean it up? – Geologist George Davis will give a full explanation of the chemical and mineralogical data from a playa sample inside of BRC in 2010. Find out the good and bad things about playa dust. Ever had trouble cleaning up after the trip to BRC? Learn a great recipe which involves simple household ingredients which removes playa dust once and for all. In addition, it’s environmentally friendly and non-toxic. REAL ‘Better living through chemistry’ with a demo.

11:00 PM – 2:00 PM Alternative Energy Demo Garden – Food served baked in a solar oven. An assortment of alternative energy devices will be on display including DIY solar ovens, a commercial solar oven, rocket stoves, evapotron for gray water and a Black Rock Solar array.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Geology of the Black Rock Desert – Ever wondered about those amazing land forms around Black Rock City? Come and learn how they were formed and what they’re about. Come and learn about the rocks from from Cathy Busby, our expert field geologist from UC Davis.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Alternative Energy Options – Clay, the Mayor of the Alternative Energy Zone (AEZ), will talk about how the AEZ doesn’t need generators and how you can reduce your need for using fossil fuels at Burning Man and at home with solar and wind power. He will show you how to determine how much power you may need to design for. Bring your questions.

Thursday – September 01, 2016

10:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Simple Solar Cooker Construction Workshop – Learn how to make a simple solar cooker. The Hunger (playa name) will go over the steps for making one for yourself.  He will have 6 kits ready to make for the first six to show up and 12 sets of instructions for the ones who did not get to make their own.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Our Inspiring Desert Home, the Black Rock Desert! Come learn about the vast Black Rock Desert and what makes it come alive. Dave Cooper, local and former manager of the Black Rock NCA will talk about playa dust, wilderness areas, historic emigrant trails, wildlife, wild horses, & more. Come with questions!

Friday – September 02, 2016

11:00 PM – 2:00 PM Alternative Energy Demo Garden – Food served baked in a solar oven.  An assortment of alternative energy devices will be on display including DIY solar ovens, a commercial solar oven, rocket stoves, evapotron for gray water and a Black Rock Solar array.

1:00 AM – 2:00 PM Simple Rocket Stove Construction Workshop – DIYers! Learn how to make a simple rocket stove that uses recycled paper pellets or twigs for fuel. Davis will go over the steps for making the stove out of recycled tin cans and then have the supplies so you can make one for yourself to take back to your camp. Limited to 10 that can make a stove but open to all for instructions. Sign up at Earth Guardians.

3:00 – 4:00 PM T Shirt Bag Workshop – Annie will demonstrate how to make a T shirt bag that you can then use as a MOOP bag or as a grocery shopping bag back in the default world to minimize your use of single-use plastic bags. We will have the supplies so you can make and decorate your own bag to take away with you. We will also demonstrate how to make your own toothpaste and wet wipes. (Annie/Beth tentative)
