  • Sustainable BRC – Energy/Climate Solutions
  • Black Rock NCA – Focus on Local
  • Inspiration and Solutions for the Planet
  • Training and Volunteer Meetings

This post gives you more details about our Sustainable BRC – Energy / Climate Solutions!  See our full schedule here!

Tuesday

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Energy Storage: The Latest Key to 100% Renewables – A brief overview of grid scale energy storage and the current hurdles faced with implementation. Talk will include overview of current technologies, regulatory hurdles, should I stay plugged into the gird or go independent, mass implementation in our short remaining time and how we get there.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM  Leading the Way Locally on Climate – Morgan Goodwin, vice mayor of Truckee, CA will speak about his efforts to make his town a leader in the global effort to combat climate change, and offer insight into how you can be more leaderful in your community.

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM – The Future of Mobility on and off the Playa – Biking, micro mobility and sharing economy: What can cities learn from burning man (and vice versa) to make future mobility more liveable and sustainable? Join Kajetan Berning in this discussion.

5:00 PM – 5:30 PM  Ice and Earth’s Climate over Thousands of Years – Eleanor Middlemas, University of Colorado Boulder, will put our current climate into historical context, i.e., a time when much of North America was under a mile-thick ice sheet. How much ice melt is caused by humans, and what will an ice-free Arctic & Antarctic mean for our planet?

Wednesday

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Imagining the Future of Burning Man – Futurists Annette Gardner and Eric Barela will engage participants in envisioning alternative futures for Burning Man 2050. Will an unlimited number of Burner avatars frolic on a 24/7 virtual playa?  Will all camps–small and large–be required to use only solar energy?  Come and co-create your preferred future of Burning Man.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Bitcoin as an Economic Battery: How Cryptocurrency Mining Can Fund and Revolutionize Renewable Energy Build-out  – Despite massive government subsidies and a push towards renewable energy sources, every day, billions of watts of existing renewable energy are wasted across the United States and the globe by curtailment from the electric grid. This is due to the variable nature of wind and solar compared to high density “on demand” power sources from fossil fuels. Come learn how energy demanding crypto mining actually presents a unique and robust economic solution for wasted, curtailed and stranded renewables, allowing providers such as wind and solar farms to make money and fund additional build-out by purchasing the previously wasted energy. Presented by Jesse Phillips.

5:00 PM – 5:30 PM  Sustainable Energy: A Family Discussion – Past Present Future. Concentrating on solar solutions and the state of energy storage.  A discussion with Tom Taska.
